It's autumn in Havana, hurricane season and the gathering of many threads in the Havana Quartet. A former high-ranking official in charge of the disposition of property left by the bourgeoise after the revolution has returned to Havana and turned up dead and sexually mutilated. The Count, ready to resign from the police force, is pressured into solving this one last case by his new boss, who has the power to grant him his request or to prolong the agony which is caused principally by the house-cleaning of many corrupt and not a few uncorrupt officers. It's also the Count's 36th birthday. Fuentes' style has always required a balance between pure police procedure and the back story of the Count, his generation and milieu, and the culture of the island under Castro, whose name is never mentioned. In this fourth episode, the balance has tilted almost entirely towards the latter, with distinctly under nourished sleuthing and a bit too much hand-wringing and weak symbolism about death, aging, weakness and the like. Not the best of the lot, but it's still fascinating, if only because it manages to acknowledge the residual class structure, corruption, and arrogance of certain elements on the island.

In tre giorni di sfida contro il tempo riesce a risolvere l'ennesimo caso di omicidio; recuperare tesori nascosti ed ormai perduti nell'oblio; precipitare ancora una volta in un abisso di bugie, ipocrisie, malaffari, corruzioni e tradimenti tipici della società cubana post-rivoluzionaria; festeggiare il suo compleanno con gli amici di sempre; farsi accettare le dimissioni da poliziotto. Chiuso in casa in una notte di uragano, con la compagnia di un cane recuparato dai rifiuti, si dedica alla stesura della storia squallida e commovente che aveva sempre desiderato scrivere: si intitolerà Passato perfecto ;-)
What do You think about Havana Black (2006)?
Por un error o un presagio del destino, terminé leyendo el último volumen de la tetralogía de Mario Conde como si fuese el tercero. Espero que al empezar con "Máscaras", pueda llenar algunas leves lagunas que para nada impidieron el disfruté de esta última aventura que cimenta las aventuras de este detective entre los disfrutes más pródigos que me he dado. Padura logró que yo quisiera ser Mario Conde, y sólo en esa afirmación baso lo muchísimos que me ha gustado leer sobre sus altibajos y la capacidad hermosa con que me han sorprendido sus casos resueltos siempre contra reloj.
