Hooray For Amanda & Her Alligator! (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
This is a very unique picture book that is broken into chapters -- "6 1/2 surprising stories about 2 surprising friends." Mo Willems' uncomplicated illustrations appear on a plain white background, which really emphasizes the two characters of the story, Amanda and her alligator. The focus of the story is on a wonderful friendship, but there is some silliness, and hurt feelings that must be resolved as well. This is a very complete and satisfying story book. I read this last year for a group of 3 and 4 year olds, at a public library and it didn't go over so well. This confused me because Mo Willems doesn't write mediocre books. Well, I tried again today on some older kids, a group of 2nd graders, and it brought the house down. They were begging to check out the book when I was finished, and one kid wanted me to read it again. I feel happy that it went well, but more so because it reaffirms for me that Mo Willems is still the best picture book/author illustrator alive.
