Los Sábados Son Como Un Gran Globo Rojo (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
I love this book! The relationship between the two sisters is authentic and sweet without being sappy. Would that we could all see everyday the way Matilda sees Saturdays, "Los sabados, el desuyano [sic] es mucho mejor. ...es igual, pero sabe tanto mejor."It has a graphic novel format with several frames per page. This might make it tricky as a read aloud. Use of a document camera/data projector would alleviate this. There are details in the illustrations that aren't mentioned in the text. As with all great picture books, you would miss out on half the story if you didn't look at the pictures.Liniers is published in many countries, but this is his first children's book to be published in the US. I look forward to more! It is a "Toon into Reading!" level 2 reader (Candlewick Press). This toon book tells the story of two sisters on a rainy Saturday. The older sister introduces her younger sister to the fun that can be had on a rainy day. It is a simple, but cute, story about the joy of a rainy day and all the fun that can be had as told from the perspective of a five-year-old. The girls listen to the rain and thunder, taste the raindrops, jump in puddles, and look for worms. The illustrations are done in ink and watercolor and look like they have been splattered by raindrops. The raindrops lend a very subtle affect, but adds just the right feel to the story. The emotions of the older sister, Matilda, are well illustrated and let the reader know how she is feeling throughout the story. The emotions of little sister, Clemmie, are more subtle in some places and might be difficult for a young reader to catch. For example, when the umbrella was blown inside-out and when Matilda gave the balloon to the rainbow, I was not sure of Clemmie's emotions until a couple comic panes later.
