The Big Wet Balloon/ El Globo Grande Y Mojado (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
This a "my first graphic novel" sort of experience for very young readers, and while the story is lacking, I'd still definitely recommend it as a read-aloud (rainy day or bedtime story). I picked this up for the cover illustration, and the artwork delivers. This book will make a great tool for building visual literacy (and bless! there's even a section in the back about how to read this sort of book to young children). As a side note, I'd also probably recommend for families with two or more children; as a former only child, I'm not sure I would have appreciated the older/younger sibling dialog without understanding it first-hand. 3 3/4 stars. I enjoyed the older sister's enthusiasm as she taught her younger sister about the fun to be had on rainy Saturday. When her bossy enthusiasm takes her too far she must make amends. I found those amends to be a bit facile, but true to life. (including the fact that the older sister seems to wind up with the lion's share of the amendment; something kid's will certainly notice.) A fun easy reader, also available in a bi-lingual edition
