This book was recommended to my by one of the people I work with. ,,It's one of the better books I've read'', he told me and I ordered Russ Harris' book The Happiness Trap straight after I returned home. The book states that we are unhappy because we suppose to be happy the whole time. Instead Harris recommends that we accept that we would sometimes feel unhappy and that we would better to connect with the emotion, but also make sure that we identify whether something is a fact or that there are emotions and thoughts that make us unhappy. The Happiness Trap is filled with all kinds of exercises that helps the reader to connect with emotions and the present moment based on the ACT therapy. It's a book that forced me to take a look at my life and the decisions I've made so far. I am happy that my collegae recommended the book to me. The coming months I will probably turn back to it, as part of my recovery. I have read a lot of self-help books over the years, but this one is different and has made a significant difference to my quality of life. Acceptance Commitment Therapy is very different to traditional approaches to anxiety and depression because it teaches tools of acceptance rather than control, using three principal mechanisms:1. Diffusion - decoupling ourselves from our thoughts2. Expansion - accepting and making room for uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, urges and sensations3. Connection - focussing on actions and behvaiours which align with our deeply held valuesI cannot recommend this book enough!
