Skippyjon Jones Cirque De Ole (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Skippyjon Jones wants to be in the circus. His mother does not think this is safe, though, because cats only have one life. Skippy decides that if he does only have one life, then he wants to live it as a Chihuahua. He gathers his circus costume and hurries off to his closet where the Cirque de Ole will take place. There is an image in this book that is different than any other image in this Skippyjon Jones book. This image is different because rather than being a landscape, single page picture, it takes up two whole pages and is formatted portrait style. The image is of Skippyjon with all of his Chimichangos stacked on top of him at the circus for their stunt. You must turn the book sideways to see the picture in the correct way. Your eyes are first drawn to Skippy, as he is the largest character on the page. Then, you make your way upward to see all the dogs stacked on top of his head all the way to the tiniest one on top. The significance of this is that we are able to get a better idea of the record the characters in the story were about to break right before they all fell. Had this image been on one page only, the author would not have been able to truly emphasize the scene enough. I have a hard time with these books because of the mixed Spanish/English language. I think these would be good books to incorporate in ESL classes and they would also work well in libraries with ESL students. I don't have much of a calling for these but they do give children some basics in the Spanish language and the stories are fun for younger readers. In this one the little cat sets off to the circus.
