I made a mistake this summer and I failed to get anyone from the community to come to the Cub Scout day camp to entertain the campers after lunch, so it was up to me. All I could think of was to read to them this book. I knew it would be lame: reading a book at summer camp, but it is all that I had. The campers loved it! The hero dog is an extraordinary protagonist, and the chickens are adorable. My son is re-reading it this fall. He laughs out loud at the crazy mother chicken. I love it when he laughs out loud while reading. We read this all in one go in about 30-35 minutes. It's written in a detective noir style which; with the clipped sentences, made it hard not to narrate in my worst cowboy accent. The performance and story style went over my children's head. But the story was well written for an easy reader 1st grade audience, and though I found it a little uninspired my son was riveted and the book was at the right level of suspense for my four year old. I think we may become fans of the author when my son learns to read.
JF CRONIN, D. The inside dog wanted to eat the chicks, but the outside dog saved them.
