The Heart And The Bottle (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

This is an achingly sentimental story, with an ending that left me feeling quite empowered. I have read almost every book by Mr. Oliver Jeffers, and very much admire his talent in conveying stories with an economy of words. His images are as emotionally evocative as his word choices, but light and playful in style. There is one particular image that makes me teary every time I see it. But don't be alarmed by that, because that sadness you may feel at this point in the story intensifies the satisfaction you will feel at the end! This is a good book that deals with death and seclution in a way that is children friendly. This book mainly tells the story through pictures, of a young girl who is very inquistive of the world when her grandad is around. However, this stops when her grandad no longer is in the pictures. She then hides away her heart in a bottle. I would use this book for KS2 and be ready for any tears from the children, as this may be a sad book especially for those children who have lost loved ones. This would be a great book to include in PSHE and possibly even RE to look at different religions deal with death

If I hadn't been at work when I read this, I probably would have bawled my eyes out. So beautiful.

Both simple and deep. Beautiful. I'd love to read it to our 6th graders to see what they think.
