The Lake Of Tears (2001) - Plot & Excerpts

A book with a male main characterIn the prequel - The Forests of Silence - Lief, Barda and Jasmine manage to acquire the Topaz, the first of seven gems of the fabled Belt of Deltora. The trio's next destination is The Lake of Tears, where they will aim to acquire the coming gem (the Ruby) and face the next jeopardous guardian. Jasmine - at first - is very reluctant to move on to The Lake of Tears because of it being ruled by the evil sorceress, Thaegan. Jasmine is eventually convinced. The three face many varying challenges including: kidnapping, deception, and onslaught, only to retrieve the Ruby and to journey forth to The City of Rats - which continues in a book named the very same.A memorable moment in the text was when Lief, Barda and Jasmine, on their second day, reach a bridge with a guard that has been bewitched by Thaegan. Jasmine feels sorrow for the golden-eyed, giant man, and the three move toward him, what follows is the man raising his sword. "To pass", he says, "you must answer three questions correctly". Each member is given one question. The first two questions are answered correctly (Barda and Jasmine had answered correctly). Lief, however, answered wrongly (due to the lack of information); the guard immediately says that Lief must be killed. Lief - being the smart little fellow he is (!) - enrages the guard. The bewitched guard now says that Lief must say a statement, if it is true, the giant will strangle Lief, if it is false, Lief will be beheaded. Lief says "My head will be cut off". This moment is memorable because this is a very unique style of writing I find is abundant in this series, it requires critical and logical thinking involving trickery and other similar things.

First I have to confess that I've begun listening to Deltora Quest after I have watched the anime made based on these books and realising, that the books tell the story further. I considered skipping the first eight books as I believed that they will be the same as what I've already seen, but in fear that I'd miss out on something I started with the first book. And I was right to do so, as this book, too, contained new or simply differently told events I truly enjoyed. For example Theagan's defeat or the moment of Kree's reappearance. But my favourite was the escape from Jin and Jod. Listening to it was nothing like watching it. It made my heart beat faster and even knowing they would escape I feared for their lives. The only downside I could find is the downside of all audiobooks: there's only one voice for all characters. It was a bit weird to here a man mimic Jasmine's voice, especially after hearing it!All in all this story kept me on my toes for the whole 2 hours and 54 minutes and I would recommend it to everyone.

What do You think about The Lake Of Tears (2001)?

This was a great book(like the rest of the series) and I highly recommend it to anyone with a taste for adventure and a love for fantasy. This series definitely fulfills my expectations for any fantasy epic(good story lines, hard to put down, almost addictive, adventurous, big monsters, long books/series). The way the Ruby was obtained was (in my opinion) genius! (spoiler, if wanted to be skipped, go 1.5 lines down) the way it was with the weeping stone is amazing and the way the creature of the pond transformed into a city was marvelous! (spoiler complete) All in all, it is an amazing series and I would recommend it to anyone with a liking for fantasy.

This is the second book in Deltora quest written by Emily Rodda. I had a feeling that this book would be wrose than the first book because like most movies the first movie is always the best. I was proven wrong after reading Lake of Tears, it had alot of Puzzle's in it which are fun to try to figure out, but sooner or later if you keep reading the character's in the book will solve the problems. I think that this was a very fun book to read and the age group this is more intended to is 7-12 year old male's who love mythology. The theme of this book is there will always be hope even if everyone else has lost hope. No matter what you do you should never lose hope because in the end you will regret it if you lost hope or you might celebrate if you kept going.

The second Deltora Quest book isn't as good as the first. I expected a lot from it since the first book is one of my favorite books. I like the new character we meet who's name we don't know because he can't talk. I think he will play a huge part in the books because he is from Tora. The only good parts of the book are when they are fighting the sorcerers from the lake and when they fight the monster living in the lake.I gave this book 2 out of 5 stars because it is very boring. There is no action other then when they fight the monsters. I would recommend this book to early middle school students because it is really easy. Boys and girls who like fantasy would like this book.
