Under The Paw: Confessions Of A Cat Man (2008) - Plot & Excerpts
As a fan of the My Sad Cat Twitter feed, I jumped on the opportunity to read this book and I was not disappointed. In "Under the Paw", Cox talks about his lifetime of loving cats, his childhood feline friends and what caused him to try and live a cat-free lifestyle... and how that inevitably created a six-cat household. His love for his cats (and his wife, Dee) comes through in his writing, and he talks about the different characteristics of The Bear, Janet and company which such love and detail that you really feel like you know them. This is especially true for fans of the Twitter Feed, who can start putting names to faces. Along with this, there's plenty of humour. Whether it's at the ludicrousness of cat behaviour, recognising cat behaviours that you have seen within your own feline overloads or generally realising the shared thoughts between all those who are Under the Paw, there are many moments where you will laugh out loud.Overall, a very good, heartwarming read and a must for all cat lovers.Only one negative is that he's a little disparaging about people who refer to themselves as parents to their pets. But I put that down to a general attitude in our society that pets cannot be kids. I won't get into a rant about that, and he's not entirely rude about it, so I will let it go. Still recommend this book and I look forward to getting my hands on a copy of The Good The Bad And The Furry. The non-twee anecdotes of 'domestic terrorism' in this book, ranging from peeing in handbags to 'the obscene snorty scronking sound it makes while it cleans its bottom', not only resonated deeply with me as a lifelong cat lady, but also had me a actually laughing out loud every few pages. A much more identifiable read for cat owners than many of the other (more famous?) pet biographies out there - can't wait to read the next two instalments!

Just not my kettle of fish - just couldn't get on with his style and gave up after about p.45.
