Unstickey (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Sarra Manning's books may spoil me for other chick-lit. Of course you know what will happen in the end -- what fun is chick-lit if it doesn't have the happy ending? -- but she ensures that you become attached to the characters and their personalities, so that you actually care about the WHY rather than just the how. In Unsticky, I loved Grace right from the start. Quirky, emotional, finding herself having failed yet again. Then we begin to see her debt problem. This is an issue tackled by Shopaholic, but it feels much more real in this story. And while most women don't find themselves so close to a "Pretty Women" situation, many of us can identify with hoping someone, often a man, will be able to rescue us -- and then wrestling with our conscious as to how to feel when he does. Manning took a common issue and magnified it, while keeping both Grace and her love interest completely human. Great read. This is my second novel by Sarra Manning (1st was You Don't Have to Say You Love Me-which I LOVED!). I'm disappointed in the fact that the author is formulaic in her plot lines. That being said, I am quite exhausted after several late night reading sessions. Grace drove me up the wall with her head in the sand approach to her finances. And I was uncomfortable with my own desire to see this couple 'stick together' as it is clear NOT a good relationship, more or less an abusive relationship with two people that clearly need therapy. But I got caught up in the flutters of romance and was glued to the book to the very end.
