La Reina Traidora (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Disappointed, love Trudi Canavans ideas, writing and flow, but this book seems to take way too long to get going, the story is really in the second half of the book. One feels she may have been made to stretch two books in this series to three. That said, I kept reading because I was looking for resolution to Lorkin's situation. Was that resolution satisfying? Sort of.I can see things progressing nicely into the next trilogy with some interesting, young, characters.I would be intrigued to see how the future of the guild progresses now, however if that takes just one book, I would prefer that to stringing it out of over three. The final book in the “Traitor Spy” trilogy. I wonder if the author, Trudi Canavan intended the title, “Traitor Queen”, to sound almost alliterative to her own name. It was a little hard to rate the book. I’d probably like to give it 3.5 stars. It was, as I mentioned in my reviews of the other two books in the trilogy, very easy to read, but perhaps too easy to read. There wasn’t much I needed to go back and think about - there seemed to be no great surprises, as everything moved along as planned. Once again, I found the continual flipping of points of view to be annoying. It meant that the reader couldn’t get invested in a story as it was quickly whipped away. I think storylines like Lorkin’s time in prison could have been more dramatic if it hadn’t been continually cut away from. There were two primary stories – the hunt for the magician thief, Skellin, in Imardin and the civil war in Sachaka. They seemed to have little to do with each other, except that Sonea, the lead Black Magician, was involved in both, for a while. I would have liked them to have been brought together. Both were brought to seemingly successful conclusions, but the climaxes of both stories were something of an anti-climax, and I do wonder, from the way people died, if they are really dead, or whether they are ready to be resurrected for the next trilogy. There were a couple of odd things though. What happened to the alliance that Dannyl was supposed to be setting up with the Duna people, an alliance that may have caused trouble with the Traitors? Why did Skellin’s ally in the Magician’s Guild turn out to be someone we’d never heard of? The epilogue hinted at various trends for a next series, with Anyi being set up as new Thief leader, and “minefire” and weapons like pistols being discussed. No doubt to be continued.
