The beginning of this book was a bit slow for me. I found myself unable to form an attachment to Lorkin, and was a bit disappointed with how passive Sonea seemed to be. Yet, I continued reading it because leaving a book unfinished bothers me. About halfway through I was really enjoying it. Unlike the Black Magician Trilogy, where I could not care less about Dannyl's exploits, I found myself interested in all four parts of the story; Sonea's, Cery's, Dannyl's, and Lorkin's. That being said, must every male traveling companion Dannyl finds himself with be attracted to him? I saw that coming from a mile away because it seems to be Ms. Canavan's MO. Also, Lorkin's sudden love of Tyvara seemed a little forced. Much of the affection appeared to be physical rather than any sort of emotional bond.Cery's loss of his family did not seem that real to me. Sure, there were some hints that he was in mourning, but on the whole it didn't feel like it affected him at all. He kept on doing what he would have ordinarily. So, that whole plot line didn't work for me.Sonea's working relationship with Regin was the most interesting for me. I'm anxious to see if he has really changed, or if this is going to be some elaborate plot on his behalf. This book is part one of the second trilogy (Traitor Spy trilogy) featuring Sonea and Cery.You really see that both have matured since it's taking place twenty years after the Black Magician's Trilogy. Anyi is a quite interesting new character - I won't say here how she fits in :-)In the last weeks I had read the Black Magician's Trilogy again and now I had to buy the second set of books.I just started the sequel The Rogue.There is one thing I feel is missing: As always there are maps in the books - but while a great part of the story is taking place in Sachaka, no map of Sachaka is provided.
