3.5 starsI listened to this book and although I loved the story, I found myself distracted by the breathy narration. Still, the characters are well-drawn, the setting (San Francisco) alluring, and the action thrilling and magical. I was going to buy the second in the series as a book when I found that I'd already gotten it as an audiobook, so I decided to give the narrator another shot. Good decision -- the breathiness is gone and now nothing is in the way of my enjoyment of quite an entertaining fantasy series. This was a really well-written mystery that I really enjoyed. At first I felt a bit bombarded with all of the witchcraft stuff--especially all the details with the magical plants and spells--but then I got used to it and even grew to enjoy it. Also, I like how the author uses the character of Lily and her struggle to fit in as a witch to highlight modern-day discrimination against people who are "different"--i.e., POC, LGBTQ, disabled, etc. All in all, a great read.
What do You think about Secondhand Spirits (2009)?
It only took this one book and I was hooked. I devoured the rest of what she has written!
