Demon Hunts is the fifth book in the Walker Papers series featuring Joanne Walker, reluctant shaman and Seattle police detective. Murphy delivers a great addition to the series, my favourite so far. The story weaves together the legend of the wendigo and shamanic mythology to create a fast-paced page-turner that was very hard to put down. This time Joanne and her partner Billy Holliday are on the trail of a cannibalistic serial killer that seems to be able to leave no physical trace behind. To track this elusive killer, Joanne has to rely on her magical talents, hunting the killer where it lives - the Lower World, a shamanistic plane of magic and spirits. Luckily, she has some help along the way from an unexpected source. This was a great installment to the series. Joanne has come a long way in a year. After starting out the year almost dead, then reluctantly accepting her magical talents and pledging to become a shaman, as the year closes, she seems to have finally embraced her magical side. Just as well, because this is the toughest case yet. If you are new to the series, I would recommend you start at the beginning with the first book, Urban Shaman. While this book could probably stand alone, you will have a better understanding of the character and the determination it took to get where she is now if you start from the beginning. The start of this book wasn't bad at all. I found the story interesting and the characters have always been fun. Normal but just different enough to make the story's good. The problem that I had with this book was at the end. The last hundred or so pages seemed to just go off the rails. The author had a good story going, but then it seems like she got bored with what was working and decided to try something else mid-stride. This might have been ok but the stuff that she interested didn't really make sense to me. It seemed like she was just throwing story elements at the wall and seeing what stuck. The problem is this made the last 100 pages not coherent at all. Instead of having a story she ended up with a mess that made no sense at all. I still like the series but I hope that the next one has a more coherent feel to it.
